Exploration of the wreck site "Astraea"
In a stormy night of Thursday, May 8th 1834, the "Astraea" was on it's way with 251 irish immigrants from Europe to Quebec, when a boy ran into the cabin and shoted "There is land ahead!". Still under full sail, the "Astraea" struck the rocks just of Little Loraine and was shattered into pieces in less than 20 minutes. Only 3 people survived the tragedy, among them the Ship doctor, Dr Jerome O' Sullivan, who kept a diary with all the details...
The remains of the "Astraea" are resting in between 20 and 30m off the cliffs on sandy and rocky bottom. After more than 170 years in the elements, the largest items to be seen are some metal beams and two anchors, which are supposedly from the same wreck ( there are several wrecks in that area ). During one of our dives just last week, we scootered out from our entry point and after a 20 minute scooter ride along some nice rock formation we found something that looked like the bell stand, but we are not sure yet. Further exploration and ducomentation will be necessary for that. However, we find the new Uemis SDA a valuable tool in documenting the different artifiacts. All we had to do was to mark the location on our SDA, and we would later have the exact depth of the object. The dive site itself is difficult to get to. Like I said before, it requieres about a 20 minute Scooter ride ( and I mean the big scooters...) To get some quality dive time at the actual wreckside, you actually need either double tanks or really large single tanks. Nitrox is making life also much easier there.
I will post any more findings soon
